The new vehicles on the road today are quickly becoming more capable and advance every single year. But I’m sure you already know this of course. Consumers need to be aware that they need to be more careful regarding the repairs and replacement parts. As the parts become more advanced, they also become much more expensive to fix and ultimately replace. One such tech is acoustic windshields, and that’s what I’m going to cover in this article.
What is an Acoustic Windshield? An Acoustic Windshield is a windshield with added layers of soundproofing insulation. In between the two layers of glass, there are two layers of Standard PVB and one layer of acoustic PVB in between the Standard PVB making the cabin of the vehicle quieter.
You need to be especially careful when replacing the windshield of your vehicle because the repair shop might opt to avoid installing an acoustic windscreen to save a few dollars. Just make sure to tell your dealer you want the same type of windshield that was in the vehicle and not an aftermarket knockoff.
Of course, the aftermarket parts are often a fraction of the price of the original. But believe me, you will hear the difference once you’re driving your car with non-acoustic replacement glass.
There is no question that these new technologies that are emerging are crucial in maintaining quality and performance. One of those performances is the noise reduction aspects of an acoustic windshield. The acoustic glass is supplied by the original manufacturer to lessen traffic and wind noise.
Some windshields of today also have Ultra Violet (UV) reducing sensors that are now growing in popularity. Most of you have probably seen or currently own a vehicle with rain sensors that turn the wipers on automatically.
There are a few ways to tell if you own a vehicle outfitted with an acoustic windshield. One way to know right off hand is by looking at the bottom of the driver side windshield. If there is the word “acoustic” or “A” or even the symbol of an “ear”, then you have an acoustic windshield.
Some windshields will also have a sticker saying “SOUNDSCREEN” (FORD) just like the picture below. It all depends on the vehicle’s manufacturer and model.
Soundscreen
The cars owners manual will also indicate if the vehicle has an acoustic windscreen. If you read through the manual, you might find the words “Auto-dimming rear-view mirror including acoustic windscreen.”
Acoustic Vinyl Windshield
Recently, PVB suppliers have created vinyl with improved acoustic-damping properties. These new interlayers are especially useful in the 1,500 Hz to 5,000 Hz frequency range.
The decibel reduction will be around 2-3 dB overall. Although not a huge difference, it results in a quieter vehicle interior that enables people to speak without shouting.
Acoustic vinyl also allows vehicle designers to reduce the thickness of the windshield without adversely affecting noise levels. This is especially significant as automotive engineers try to cut weight off vehicles to make them more fuel efficient. Acoustic vinyl windshields meet all of the same federal safety specs as regular vinyl windshields.
Tests do show that noise is being transmitted through the vehicle’s glazing and comes from various sources:
Air-pressure changes against the windshield at high speeds.
Air hitting on the edges of the vehicle’s body panels.
Additional cars and environmental noise.
Road noise and vibration are also transmitted within the body of the car.
Difference Between a Regular and Acoustic Windshield.
Benefits of an Acoustic Windshield
Of course, the main benefit of having an acoustic windshield is the noise reduction within the vehicle’s cabin. There are other benefits however that are even more important than noise reduction.
One such advantage is the improved integrity of the glass. This makes the windshield more secure and works as a theft deterrent. Acoustic windshields will take much longer to break through the laminated glass, and reduces the chance your vehicle becomes a victim of a “smash and grab” theft.
The special laminated glass that comes from an acoustic windshield allows for a reduced amount of ultraviolet raise being transmitted through the glass. People with melanoma will undoubtedly benefit from the reduction of UV raise entering the vehicle.
The reduction of UV raises not only help the passengers but also helps preserve the interior of the vehicle from color fading on the dash and leather seats.
And lastly, the vinyl interlayer’s lower mass enables vehicle designers to maintain the equal overall window thickness while decreasing the weight of the window related to monolithic tempered glass.
The downside of a Laminated Acoustic Windshield
One of the major downsides of having an acoustic windshield is the overall cost. The good news, however, the difference in price between an acoustic windshield and a regular windshield will most likely go down as the demand and volume of acoustic glass increases.
The types of vehicles on the road today equipped with an acoustic windshield are spread across all sizes and price range. Unlike in the past, the acoustic windshield is not only reserved for luxury vehicles.
Difference Between Double Glazing and Laminated Windshields
Modern vehicles use laminated glass, rather than the double glazed windshield. There are several differences between the two types of glass.
Double Glazed Windshield; The way the noise goes through a double glazing windshield would be similar to the glazing windows in your home. The glass is formed using two pieces of glass that are separated by an air gap. The reason this type of glass was so heavy is that of each of the two pieces of glass needs to be effective in automotive safety and has to pass all safety test.
Laminated Acoustic Windshield; The reason why this type of windshield is lighter is that the sheets of glass are thinner by about 5mm or 4mm. The way this glass is formed is by taking two pieces of thin glass and bonding them together by a piece of plastic. Acoustic windshields have an acoustic film between the two parts of plastic.
Double glazed windshields were effective regarding noise reduction was achieved with mass. As we know, more mass usually equals to better soundproofing. Laminated windshields achieve its noise reduction properties by damping through its construction by using an acoustic film in between the two pieces of glass.

The best advice I can give in concluding this article is by advising you first to check if you have an acoustic windshield. Second is to make sure to ask the repair person about the type of windshield you’ll be getting when it’s time for its replacement.

White noise machines, I’m sure everyone reading this article has had one in their home to either help you fall asleep or drown out background noise. A white noise machine can be a specific product that their only purpose is to create white noise. Most of us, however, use a fan or a humidifier to create white noise. But why do white noise machine help you sleep? That’s what I’ll be talking about so keep reading.
Why does white noise machine help you sleep? The short answer to how a white noise machine helps you sleep is simple. The machine creates a constant white noise; if loud enough can drown out other external noise that would otherwise wake you from your slumber.
To learn how white noise helps you sleep, we should take a quick step back and examine how sound and hearing works.
How Sound and Hearing Works
Sound is a wave that travels through the air with vibrating molecules as it goes along. The vibrations hit the eardrums then passes through to the inner ear. There are cells inside the inner ear called hair cells. Hair cells convert the vibrations into electrical signals.
These electrical signals proceed to the brain and determine what sound you’re hearing.
The frequency of that sound wave is measured in Hertz. Hertz is the measurement of how often the particles vibration repeat in one second.
The human species is capable of hearing sounds somewhere between 20 Hertz all the way up to 20,000 Hertz. The higher the frequency gets, the higher the tone you’ll be able to hear. As the frequency rises the harder it will be to ignore; Even if you’re not awake, the brain can still register the sounds around you.
So when you hear noises at night, and it wakes you, it’s the sudden shift in the frequency of background noise that disrupts your sleeping brain.
So how can you stop those sudden frequency sounds from pulling you out of slumber? Here we are, back to white noise.
What is White Noise?
White noise, accurately speaking, is a constant noise that covers all hearable frequencies at once at a continuous power rate per Hertz.
Its frequency spectrum is entirely flat so that no new sounds can be heard above the white noise, that is of course If the white noise is playing at a high enough volume. White noise essentially masks all other sounds with its constant noise. And that’s where it gets its name.
White noise is similar to white light: white light is all wavelengths of light, and white noise is all frequencies of sound.
So because it’s defined as consistent noise with equal power across all frequencies, that means some sounds that people call white noise are simply not white noise.
The sound of raindrops and wind, for instance, or the crashing waves on a beach are indeed soothing sounds that can drown out other noises, but they are technically not white noise.
Colors of Noise

As some of you have probably already heard, white isn’t the only color of sound. There are other colors of noise that focus on specific frequencies, comparable to the color of light that follows a precise wavelength.
I’ve recently learned that some studies show that pink noise is actually a better sleep sound than white noise.
Just like white noise, pink noise comprises all frequencies that are audible to humans ears.
One difference, however, the energy per Hertz diminishes as the frequency rises, but It’s a very subtle difference. If you were to play them back to back, you could then notice the subtle differences, but otherwise, it would be quite tricky.
There was a study of 11 subjects was conducted in regards to pink noise. When the researchers compared the results between playing pink noise versus no noise at all, the subjects that were fed pink noise had a prolong deep sleep and improve memory recollection come morning.
There are additional colors of noise, also, corresponding to various frequencies like how colored light concentrates on varying wavelengths.
The different colors of noise range from red, brown, blue, violet, black, green, and orange noise. Even my spellcheck didn’t know there was orange noise since it kept changing the word “noise” over to “nose.” I guess there are more orange noses around than orange noise! Go figure!
After searching the internet, however, I could not find any research on how well all these different noises helps a person sleep better through the night.
So the question remains, why do we humans find white noise calming?

Well, What I quickly discovered while looking through research and also reading the opinions of regular people on Reddit forums, is that it’s a personal preference whether someone likes the sound of white noise.
Some people love white noise, and some despise it. One thing is for sure though; most people did admit that they find it helpful for falling asleep and preventing them from waking up prematurely due to its ability to mask other external sounds.

As I was in the process of doing my research for this article, I came across something interesting and also something I never even thought of before now.
The question was Is White Noise Harmful? I for one certainly never even considered the fact that listening to white noise could have some negative impact on the brain but apparently, there is some new research that could shed some light on this topic.
How can something as natural as white noise be in some way harmful to your health? Well, this is how I’m interpreting it; While white noise machines make it easier for light sleepers fall asleep by drowning out any outside noise, or background noise I should say, that would otherwise wake them up throughout the night.
I’ve never been a light sleeper, so I never required it, but I do have a small white noise machine for when I sleep in hotels. I usually get woken up by slamming doors when people are leaving to catch their early morning flight.
I actually wrote an article all about how to sleep better in a hotel room. You might find it helpful! Even I learned a few things while writing the article.
I found out about the possible harmful effect of white noise while reading an article published in the medical journal JAMA Otolaryngology – head & neck surgery.
White Noise Sleep Research
Researchers from the University of California were studying whether or not white noise can cause tinnitus. Tinnitus is when someone has a constant ringing in their ear that just won’t go away.
According to ScienceAlert, the researchers looked at a bunch of past animal studies that implied listening to white noise for an extended period on a regular basis could affect the brain cells causing someone to experience tinnitus.
The animals were exposed to sound between 60 and 70 decibels which are around the same level as your typical white noise machine. The author of the study also stated the decibel level in which we’re talking about is regarded as “safe” by the U.S. Occupation Safety and Health Administration.

What I took away from this ONE research is that there needs to be a lot more research required to determine whether white noise can cause tinnitus in some people.
I for one think that if there was a chance that white noise machines can cause tinnitus in some people that it would only be a tiny percentage of users. Otherwise, I’m convinced that we would know if even a small portion of the millions upon millions of people using white noise machines on a nightly basis would suffer some adverse side effects.
Even a small percentage of white noise machine users would still be in the millions and with that many people suffering from the negative effect of white noise machines there would already have been some talk in the media; to the point where sales of white noise machine would have plummeted, and for good reasons.
I would certainly not use a machine that creates white noise If I believed that it was causing harm to my children while they sleep. But the studies were conducted on animals, not humans and we have a different biology than the test subjects used in this research.
Doctor Robert Glatter, an assistant professor of emergency medicine at Lenox Hill Hospital says that there could be some truth to the theory concerning if white noise is harmful. The majority of people suffering from tinnitus were exposed to long-term and intense exposure to very loud noise.
It is all how you use your white noise machine, if you crank it to full volume then yes, you will most likely cause some hearing damage over time. The intent of a white noise machine is for peaceful and relaxing sound to emit from them.
Common sense would dictate the volume being set at a reasonable volume by the majority of people using a white noise machine on a constant basis.
Why Does White Noise Help Babies Sleep
White noise can help babies sleep whether they are easy sleepers or if you’re the unlucky parent of a light sleeper. That’s ok because white noise will really benefit you as the light sleeper begins to fall asleep faster and most importantly, sleep through the night.
Babies are already used to hearing white noise all the time. As they were in the mother’s womb, they would begin to hear around 15 weeks of gestation. So in reality, while they are in the womb and listening to a heartbeat just a few inches away from them; and all the fluids swooshing around then its no wonder that when they are in a car, they always fall asleep so easily from the constant humming sound of the engine.
Dr. Karp wrote in an article in Huffington Post that the noise babies hear in the womb from the mother’s insides is louder to them than a vacuum cleaner is to us in the outside world.
How White Noise Helps us Sleep
The reason why it’s good for babies to have a white noise machine is that after they are born most of them become stressed; because of all the new sounds they heat all around them, and that can lead to nonstop crying and also colic.
White noise machines switch on the babies calming reflexes and quickly helps them relax and then fall asleep. I read a study a while back that was claiming that approximately 80% of babies fall asleep within five minutes after turning on a white noise machine. This works with newborns all the way up to toddles and heck, even right through adulthood.
My twin boys are used to the noise of a white noise machine. The first thing they do when they go in their room during bedtime is going directly to their white noise machine and turn it on before jumping into bed.
A white noise machine is perfect for nurseries with thin walls. There are also many other things you can do to better soundproof a nursery but using white noise is at least a good start.

If you’re like me and only use your bicycle for mountain biking and you live in a snowy part of the world in winter, you will have a hard time getting back on the saddle come summer. I was talking to a friend that is way more knowledgeable than me when it comes to biking in general, and he told me that I should join a spinning class for the winter. Let’s just say I’m more of a workout at home kind of guy. So I did some extensive research to find out the quietest bike trainer money could buy!

Having a quiet bike trainer is essential, especially if your bicycle training on an upper level of a home or apartment. Myself I have mine in the basement, but I wanted it to be quiet mostly so I could hear the television without cranking the volume and not wake up the kiddos.

I’ve only tried a fluid resistant bike trainer once, and I found that it had the best “road feel” among all the other types of bike trainers. On top of that, fluid bike trainers can be some of the best and quietest bike trainers on the market
Magnetic Bike Trainer
Mag trainers, also known as magnetic bike trainers use alterable magnetic resistance to create friction against the rear bicycle wheel. The mag trainer’s drive is a flywheel that is equipped with rotating magnets that will generate an adjustable amount of resistance as you peddle.
One setback to some is that you need to get off the bike if you want to change the resistance setting. There is an alternative to this by attaching a cable from the handlebar to the bike trainer.

The technology of magnetic trainers is quite simplistic with its progressive resistance, so there should not be any issues of failure down the road. Bike Rollers
Ok, bike rollers are not considered a bicycle trainer, but since it’s purpose is for indoor cycling by using your bicycle I decided to add it on the list.
There are indeed pros and cons to using bike rollers, but to me, the cons outweigh the pros, primarily if you’ve never used one of these before.
Since the bicycle is not attached to anything, it takes a good amount of talent and practice to be able to use a bicycle roller. One pro is that they are on the less expensive side of bike trainers. They would compare in price to a bottom of the line bike trainer.
I’ve personally never tried bike rollers, but I will get one someday if I can find a cheap used one online. I don’t want to spend a bunch of money on something that I might not even be able to use to their full potential.
Bike rollers can be quiet, but it depends how noisy your bicycle is while riding; and also the ruggedness of the wheels will also be a factor regarding noise.

Here is my top four list of the quietest bike trainer for use in an apartment especially because heck, who needs ten choices, it just makes it that much more difficult to decide.

One important factor to consider while looking for a quiet bicycle trainer is if your bicycle is even compatible with the bike trainer you’re about to buy.
This is important because I assumed that every bike trainer would be compatible with any bikes out there. Well, that isn’t always the case because my mountain bike was not compatible with the first trainer I bought and had to return.
It wasn’t the bike precisely that was not compatible with the bicycle trainer but the wheel that was the problem. Many modern mountain bikes on the market today, including mine (Trek Fuel EX8) come equipped with 29-inch wheels.
Many bike trainers on the market can only accommodate bicycles with wheels size between 26 and 28 inches. Make sure to look that up if you have a different type of wheel size.
Do I Need to Buy a Skewer or can I Use the One on My Bike?

A reason why the one that is on your bicycle would not be good to use in most cases is that the skewer that comes in the box of the bike trainer is designed to be perfectly compatible with the specific bicycle trainer.
So the moral of the story is wait because you probably have one coming in the box.

Wind trainers are usually very loud. Magnetic and also fluid trainers are quieter, making them ideal for apartment tenants or people with roommates.
How Much Should You Pay for a Bicycle Trainer?
Indoor bicycle trainers come in a wide range of prices; this is dependent on the model, type and features they can offer. But overall you can expect to dish out from $50 to well over $500.
For the fluid bike trainers, like most of them on our list, you will pay between $140 and $350.
The wind bike trainers and the magnetic trainers offer some of the lowest prices varying between $30 and $100.
If you’re aiming more towards a roller bicycle trainer, you should expect to pay between $100 and $200 for a decent model.
Tips for Using a Bike Trainer
The first tip is at the time when you’re about to set up your new bike trainer. If possible, set up your bicycle trainer in your basement or garage to not disturb anyone in your home; and most importantly, these two spaces are some of the cooler areas of a home that doesn’t have central air conditioning. You do not want to overheat yourself when using your bike trainer.
Before you saddle up on your bicycle, make sure to have water and a towel nearby since you’ll most likely be sweating in no time. Also, Eat something a few hours prior to cycling to build up enough energy for a proper workout.
Before any type of strenuous workout, you should always warm up your body. You can accomplish this by starting off with an easy 5 minute of cycling before going to a more difficult setting. Just like your warm up, do a moderate 5-minute cooldown ride at the end.
One of the best types of cardio workouts I know is intervals. I find that interval workouts are the ones where I sweat the most, even with the small breaks in between. What I mean by interval workouts is going at your max for 4 minutes and then slowing down to catch your breath for a couple of minutes. Repeat this over and over again and you will see for yourself that this will give you a much better workout versus going the same pace through your training.

Why Is Engine Bay Soundproofing Important?
Engine bay soundproofing is essential because “a quiet boat is a good boat.” That’s what my uncle used to tell me; it’s like a car when an older vehicle starts making noise you know the car is not in prime condition. A boat is the same because as boat ages, you will begin hearing more engine noise and more overall noises throughout the boat.
New boats are quiet, and when something like a boat or car is quiet while running means, they are well engineered, dependable and gives a comfortable ride.
I don’t know about you, but when I was on my families boat, I found it so relaxing to anchor somewhere to have a peaceful afternoon. The boat engine would be off for most of the time, but while cruising, we had a boat with an engine that made a terrible noise.
It was basically the noise of an engine but intensified ten times over. We couldn’t wait to get to where we wanted to go and shut it off to have some peace and quiet.
It was also a bit embarrassing traveling around the river with that noisy monstrosity. When I was younger we never really thought about soundproofing a boat engine, so my father eventually traded it for a newer model, like the majority of people would have done. I wish I would have had an article about engine bay soundproofing to show my father; I could have saved him a few dollars!

The reason why I find it essential to soundproof a boat engine bay is that while you have a boat, you want to make it worth the hefty price you paid for it. If you’ve ever thought about buying your first boat, you’ve most likely heard the adage “The best days when having a boat, is the first day and the last day.”
The reason for that saying is apparent; you’re happy on the first day of having your new toy but so happy to finally get rid of the boat after you find out that it is not as relaxing and all its cracked up to be.
Let’s try to make your boat ownership the best decision you’ve made to have your summertime fun; by possibly fixing a significant noise problem that will cost you very little money and even less work.
Side Effects of Loud Engine Noise
The side effects of loud engine noise I am referring to is concerning your health. The sound of a boat engine can exceed well over a hundred decibels. If not adequately insulated the engine noise can negatively affect your hearing.
The sound pressure is measured in decibels, and like the temperature scale, decibels can go below zero. Someone with terrific hearing could hear a sound at -15 decibels. You enter the danger zone when the noise is over 85 decibels. Above 85 decibels is when you can begin to suffer some severe damage to your hearing.
If your boat engine puts out a constant noise of over a hundred decibels, you will eventually begin to feel the effects of hearing loss.
Engine Compartment Insulation Material
If you’re looking for a used boat, you might want to consider adding some new sound absorbing material where noise persists. The reason for this is because the life expectancy of most sound absorbing material that is installed in boats today is approximately ten years.
Some people might get confused when they hear a ten-year-old boat making more noise than its five-year-old counterpart and think there is something wrong with the engine.
Before assuming that you need someone to tinker with the motor, take a look at the sound deadening material in the engine bay for any wear and tear. It might be time to rip out the old material and replace it with a fresh new sound deadening product.
After years of enduring moisture from either fresh water or salt water, the sound deadening material will lose its effectiveness as it breaks down. A few cracks here and there will make the engine noise easily pass through them and make for a loud voyage.
Vibrational Damage
Not only that but every year the boat is running, the vibrations from the boat will get more prominent; and will result in loosening bolts throughout the ship.
After the bolts have loosened to a certain extent, you will begin to hear more and more rattles and squeaks. These noises will make your boat sound older every year.
If you want to avoid your boat sounding old and loud, you will have to make sure the sound insulation material is kept in tip-top shape. The sound insulation material in the engine bay will not only reduce noise but will lessen the vibrations coming from the engine.
I see some individuals around the internet WRONGLY suggesting material that is not an appropriate certified marine grade product for use in the application you are intending. Fire and also water resistance are necessary. Get the right stuff or hire your dealer to perform the job. Engine rooms can be noisy, hot with a potential for fire.
Two Different Types of Boat Engine Noises
There are different types of noises that a boat engine will make. You will need to carefully inspect the current sound dampening material to see if there is damage and what you need to fix it.
Structural born Noise
Structural born noise is when the boat is physically vibrating and causing multiple squeaks and rattles due to loosening bolts and fastening. It is the actual impact of an object on a building element, in this case, it would be a boat.
In most cases structure born noises are the hardest to isolate versus airborne sound; because the sound waves are a result of both sides of a building material vibrating. The reason they are challenging to isolate is that there are usually multiple sources.
Luckily in the case of a boat, the structure-borne sound would typically come from the engine bay, and that makes it easier for us to mitigate.
Airborne Noise
Airborne noise is the sound waves that are transmitted through the atmosphere. In this specific case, the airborne noise would come from the engine and other areas of the marine craft.
You can reduce the amount of airborne noise by physically blocking the source of the noise with noise blocking material. You will not be able to block the engine noise completely, but you can bring it back to what it sounded like when the watercraft was new, or at least close to new.
Airborne and structural noise is almost always intertwined when the sound is loud enough. If the airborne noise is loud, it can cause a structure to vibrate causing structural noise and vise versa.
1 – Outboard Noise Reduction
Outboard Motor Noise Reduction
While the majority of engines have a cover, it generally does little to minimize noise. This engine cover, called the cowling, is mainly inefficient regarding noise reduction unless you supplement it with something far better.
Consult your boat owners manual before removing the cowling. The engine covers on marine crafts are usually very sturdy, but you could still do some internal damage if you’re not careful. You definitely do not want to have engine trouble in the future because of this DIY soundproofing project.
Now that you’ve removed the engine cover you’ll see if the sound dampening material shows signs of damage. You can either remove the old sound dampening material or place the new stuff on top.
If you place the new material on top of the worn one, you could be doubling the noise reduction effect; but you could also be defeating the purpose of adding new material if the old one creates gaps that will let noise bleed through.
One thing I need to point out is that this will not solve the noise problem for every situation. There could be other factors as to why the engine noise is unbearable that simple boat engine cover insulation will not fix.
Outboard Motor Cowling Insulation
The cowling is off, and now you’re wondering what kind of sound dampening insulation you should buy. Not all noise insulation are created equal.
You will need soundproofing insulation that is not only heat proof but waterproof also. There are some great insulation out there made for vehicles that are heat proof but not waterproof so make sure you read the label carefully if you’re buying this at your local hardware store.
The outboard motor cowling insulation I recommend is the Stinger Road Kill product from Amazon. This stuff is waterproof, moisture proof and heat resistant.
This stuff works well in eliminating a broad spectrum of sound frequencies. The max loaded vinyl is very dense and also flexible and contains Barium Sulfate to increase its density.
Boat Motor Insulation Application
When installing the sound dampening material in the cowling make sure not to cover the air vents while covering as much surface as possible. There will be some noise coming from the air vents, but this is unavoidable. Make sure the material does not come into contact with any moving parts, mainly if you are sticking it over the existing cowling insulation.
I did see some people online suggest a placing a cowling cover, the covers you put over the cowling while traveling to avoid rock chips. These types of motor covers SHOULD NOT be in place while you’re cruising on the water. The cover is strictly for when you’re traveling on roads or when the boat is in storage and not in use.
Please do not believe everything you read online because some soundproofing websites have very misleading information. Wrong information could end up overheating the engine and cause significant damage.
Reducing Outboard Motor Noise With a DIY Muffler
I’ve done some research online and by talking to some boat owners about how to minimize outboard motor noise the DIY way. I came across something interesting. A boat owner built a simple muffler system using a PVC pipe. They call this an outboard motor silencer.
I have to confess that I have never built this or even seen it in real life, but know someone that swears by it. There is also a YouTube video explaining the process.
DIY Outboard Motor Noise Reduction
As the picture above shows is that all you need is a curved PVC pipe with a cap on the end. Drill a few holes in the pipe close to the end cap using the water column as a sound baffle. This design can comfortably accommodate multiple propeller exhaust sizes.
This method for reducing outboard motor noise has a few added benefits; by giving a consistent back pressure that is consistent with a normal operation of the outboard motor when it is submerged in the water. This will lead to a much smoother idle and a faster prime of the water pump and tell tale.
Having this attachment will slow your boat down, that is the side effects of having a cheap fix for a loud boat motor. Read some of the comments in the video below for an insight into how this method worked for some boaters.
Inboard Motor Noise Reduction
Solutions for an Inboard Motor Noise Reduction
Inboard motors are much less of an issue when it comes to sound proofing because they are already pre-insulated. If you find that your inboard motor is noisy while the hatch is closed then there is most likely something wrong with the engine itself.
A noisy boat motor can still be a problem even with an inboard engine because there can be cracks in the noise dampening insulation.
All you should need for this small soundproofing project is some self-adhesive project is rubber insulation matting. You can use the same insulation as I recommend for the outboard motor cowling insulation because of its heat resistance and the fact that it is also waterproof.
Make sure that when you’re sticking the sound insulation within the motor area that you do not block any air vents. If you block any of these vents, your engine will most likely overheat so watch out for that. It is usually common sense, but sometimes even I make simple mistakes when my mind is not in the right place.

The most Important step when soundproofing any room in your home or office is to make sure the door is soundproof. The door is, of course, the biggest opening in most places that anyone would attempt to soundproof.
How to Soundproof a Door? The best way to soundproof a door in your home or office would be to install a solid core door. Also, attaching a rubber door sweep that is tight enough on the floor will seal the lower gap completely.
There are many other ways to soundproof a door since installing a solid core door can be expensive; especially for people on a low soundproofing budget.
So, that being said, I will think of every single way on how to soundproof a door so you can make a sound decision on which steps are best for you.
I was going to skip writing an article about how to soundproof a door because there is already some great information out there online. But I did realize there is some missing information that could prove very useful in your soundproofing efforts.
This is my personal list of fifteen ways on how to soundproof a door. I will keep updating this article as new ideas come to mind, or if any of you reading this article think of a way to soundproof a door that I might have missed.
The only problem is that it is also one of the most expensive ways to soundproof a door so it might prove to be a bit too expensive for some people.
I will explain why swapping your hollow core door for a solid core door is an idea worth considering.
Most homes today have hollow core door throughout their home. Most of the time the only solid core door is either the front door or back door of the house leading outside.
The difference between both types of doors is in its name. A hollow core door consists of a hollow door, usually made of thin sheets of wood.
You know its a hollow core just by knocking on the door. If you hear an echo, it is a hollow core door.
Another easy way to determine if the door is hollow is the weight of the door. If you knock on the door and you feel it wobble then its indeed not a solid door.
Go knock on the doors within your home and find out for yourself if you think they are solid or hollow.
A solid core door is the opposite of a hollow core door as it is completely solid through and through. A solid door will make it much harder for sound to be able to pass through.
Like I stated above, a solid core door are the doors that usually enters your house from the outside; and when you knock on them, they should not echo at all.
Some people think that a solid door is usually made of steel, but that is not the case. There are many different types of solid doors made of wood that wouldn’t seem out of place inside your home.
2 – Attach a Door Sweep
Attaching a door sweep on the bottom of the door is an excellent first step when you’re figuring out how to soundproof a door.
Almost every door inside a home leading from room to room has a relatively large gap on the bottom.
There is no point even to install a solid core door if you’re going to leave an open gap where sound can easily travel through.
A door sweep will seal that bottom gap and ensure that you have minimal noise coming in from the other room.
Noise reduction isn’t the only advantage a door sweep adds to a room you’re soundproofing; they have a few more benefits.
One advantage of having a door sweep is that it keeps bugs on the other side of the door.
A third reason for having a door sweep is for temperature control. The reason why temperature slowly drop when turning the air conditioner on during the summer months is due to cracks and gaps of the doors.
Rubber door sweeps can prevent the loss of hot air within a room.
If you choose to install a door sweep, you need to understand that door sweeps are not as simple to install as weatherstripping tapes.
You will most likely need to drill screws in the door sweep to attach it to the bottom of the door.
This particular door sweep has a metal section where it screws into the door. It also has a hard rubber bottom to ensure that even dust won’t be able to get through to the next room.

3 – Weatherstrips for Door Soundproofing
One of the best ways to soundproof a wobbling door is by using weather strips yo make it a tight close. You can use all sorts of different types of weather strips.
Most people use weatherstrips as an air seal around windows, but it works very well to help block noise around a door.
This weatherstrip is self-adhesive. And that is a must-have for this type of project. There is even a door sweep included in this soundproofing kit as a bonus!
The very first step before installing the weather strip is to properly clean the area where you will be connecting the strip.
Make sure the surface is clean and dry before applying the soundproof strip.
Just peel off a small section of the strip by exposing the self-adhesive surface, and stick it on the inside of the door frame from the top corner.
I find the best place to install the strip is where the door makes contact to the door frame while closed.
Placing the weather strip in the area will make the door squish the strip and forming an airtight seal around the door.
One bonus I want to mention regarding this type of door soundproofing method is that you will never hear the door slam thanks to the weather strip.
4 – Vynil Door Gasket
A vinyl door gasket is very similar to a regular weatherstrip, but they tend to be a bit more expensive.
I did find an inexpensive door gasket however on Amazon that works reasonably well.
Door gaskets are typically used around a car door to keep water, moisture, and noise from entering the cabin. They can also be used to seal the gaps at the door jambs and the header.
These types or vinyl door gaskets are also good at blocking light and moisture from entering the room.
The installation process is very similar to the weatherstrip.
All you need to do is to follow the steps above, and you should be well on the way in having a soundproof door.
5 – Seal All the small Cracks and Gaps
If you still have a few tiny cracks and gaps around your door, even after installing a vinyl door gasket or a self-adhesive weatherstrip, then your next step is to add some soundproofing sealant.
To know for sure if you have a few cracks letting the sound come into the room all you need to do is turn the lights in whatever room is on the opposite side of the door you’re attempting to soundproof.
Next, you will need to go into the room where you’re soundproofing the door.
Close the door and turn off the lights. After doing this, you should be able to see the light coming into the dark room through the cracks.
If you see the light coming through, you could quickly seal the small crack with some soundproofing sealant.
I would actually try this before I install any type of weatherstrip around the door.
Cracks and gaps around doors are more prevalent in older homes. Older homes suffer warping and shifting of the foundation, but can also happen in newer homes.
Best Noiseproofing Sealant For Gaps and Cracks
Sealing the gaps and cracks is relatively simple.
I recommend using this insulating sealant from Green Glue. Green glue is one of the cheapest and most effective soundproofing compounds on the market today.
Any types of cracks between walls, ceilings, and doors compromise the sound isolation of any room. Cracks and gaps allow noise to penetrate into adjoining rooms.
Simply adding Green Glue Noiseproofing Sealant to seal the cracks along the door frame can reduce noise transmission by one hundred times or more.
You can easily clean it with soap and water while the sealant is still wet.
Some people will recommend crack sealants in the form of a spray. These types of sealants are to close more significant 1/2″ gaps, and not a tenth of an inch.
You should avoid using spray foam to seal a tiny gap along a door and stick with Green Glue Sealant.
I promise I don’t have any stocks in the Green Glue company. I love their products and know for a fact that they actually work.
6 – Sound Isolation Padding Tape
Sound Isolating padding tape is another cheap way of sealing any cracks along the edge of the door.
Padding tape can also act as an alternative to weatherstrips or door gaskets.
The padding tape is self-adhesive and commonly used in wallboard installation. You can make use of it while trying to figure out how to soundproof a door.
Sound isolation padding breaks the sound path. It is handy and inexpensive for reducing sound transfer through walls and door frame gaps.
7 – Use a Soundproof Blanket
How to soundproof a door with a Soundproof Blanket
There are many cheap soundproof blankets on the market. Most soundproof blankets have built-in fiberglass fibers which are known to be a great sound absorber. (Study)
There are a few ways you can go about utilizing a soundproof blanket in hopes of soundproofing a door.
Many people use moving blankets which can be a cheaper alternative than buying specifically made soundproof blankets.
The biggest problem I have with moving blankets for soundproofing a door is its size and the lack of grommets.
The size can be a factor because you would probably have a hard time finding a moving blanket the same size as a doorway.
I find the look of a soundproof blanket hanging in front of a door a bit ugly. If the soundproof door is hidden, then it should be fine.
When you’re soundproofing a room for work or a recording studio then utilizing a soundproof blanket is a good idea; because it also absorbs some of the echoes from the room on the other side.
This particular blanket is not cheap, but when properly installed it would be the only thing you would need to soundproof a door.
You will need to be creative as to how you will hang it, so it has a tight seal, but it is very doable.
The way I would hang the blanket is a bit different from anyone else I’ve seen online because I wouldn’t hang the blanket from the grommets (if the blanket has grommets). I would attach the blanket using velcro!
You’re probably wondering how the heck would velcro hold a heavy soundproof blanket. Keep reading, and I will show you how.
You need to be careful as to what type of double-sided self-adhesive velcro tape you use since most of them will not stick very well to fabric surfaces.
This velcro is made for metal and fabric surfaces.
You will need to buy a few rolls because depending on the length of the roll.
The first step will be to stick one side to the velcro tape on the entire length of the molding around the door frame.
Stick the velcro on both sides and the top of the door. Make sure all three sides join each other so it is one perfect rectangle. Of course, you won’t have any velcro on the bottom, but you can place something on the floor if you feel the soundproof blanket doesn’t have a tight seal for the bottom of the doorway.
Now do the same on the soundproof blanket. Each side you will stick the opposite side of the velcro that you have on the door molding, except the bottom side.
You should have all three sides of the blanket and door frame molding with opposite sides of the velcro tape. The rough side on the molding and the soft side on the blanket.
It is now time to stick both sides of velcro together. You now have a soundproof blanket that is giving you a tight seal around your soundproof doorway.
This is one of the most expensive processes but it does work wonders. Most people use these types of soundproof blankets to soundproof a window.
You can buy them in a few different sizes to match the size of windows and doors.
8 – Use Soundproof Curtains
As with soundproof blankets, soundproof curtains can work reasonably well in soundproofing a doorway; but only if you install the curtain correctly. (Study)
The problem with a soundproof curtain is that you will most likely leave it hanging in front of the door, and that would leave gaps on all sides of the door.
You can utilize the same process as I suggested for installing the soundproof blanket to make a tight seal around the door with the curtain.
The main reason why I also added the soundproof curtains even though I find the soundproof blanket idea much better is that a set of soundproof curtains are much cheaper.
You can also buy a one-sided curtain, so you’re not left with an extra side that you have no use for.
Another nice trick is to sow the two sides of the soundproof curtains together to double the thickness.
You could bring the curtains to a seamstress in case you don’t have a sewing machine.
A seamstress can do that for you for just a few dollars. Doubling the thickness will block noise more efficiently and using only one side of the curtain.
These curtains are 52″ wide, and 95″ in length. And with these curtains sowed together to double the thickness you should have a pretty good sound barrier between the two rooms.
There are many ways to soundproof a room cheaply. You could go through a major renovation process, but most of the time there are many small things you could do to soundproof a room in your home. In this article, I will be talking about && ways for how to soundproof a room.
How to soundproof a room? The way you soundproof a room is first to find out where the noise is coming from and then isolate the intrusion. The best way to soundproof a room in your home is by introducing sound dampening material and selling all the cracks and holes in the room.
Whether you’re looking to soundproof a room due to noisy neighbors from an adjoining wall or outside noise coming from a window; there are many ways you can get the job done cheaply or even for free from items you already have in your home.
I will talk about how to soundproof a room the DIY way because let’s face it, most of us attempt to do things like this ourselves.
Of course, you can’t expect a full 100% soundproofing whether you go with a professional or you go for a DIY. Once you apply however more than one of these methods listed below, you might be surprised at the results.
This is why it’s fun to learn how to soundproof a room cheaply with items you already have within your home.
Here is our simple checklist to go through when you’re trying to figure out how soundproof a room cheaply or even for free!
1 – How to Soundproof a Room with Sound Absorbing Material
There are many sound absorbing materials you can utilize in your efforts to soundproof a room inside your home.
Some will say that you can’t soundproof a room using sound absorbing the material. I would have to agree with those claims, but you should realize that you need to begin by making the inside of your room quiet.
The very first step you should take when soundproofing a room is to eliminate the echo. If you’re inside the room and all you hear is noise bouncing around from wall to wall, well, that doesn’t make for a very peaceful place to relax or get some work done.
This is one of the soundproofings that you can do for free with things around the house. I’ll explain below. Here is a list of what sound absorbing material you can use to soundproof a room and also how they individually work.
Soundproof blankets
You might be wondering what exactly would someone use a soundproof blanket for and why, well the answer is a simple one. The use of a soundproof blanket is to help block and absorb sound; you can pretty much use them for everything you can imagine within soundproofing a room.
Soundproof blankets have many uses and styles depending on how you’re going to incorporate them inside the room you’re trying to soundproof. You might want to use the blanket to help block street noise or noisy neighbors by hanging them over a window.
There are different blankets for different uses. You can buy some less expensive moving blankets, they are very dense, and also cheaper than your actual soundproof blankets.
These moving style blankets will assist in drowning out higher decibel noises. Quilted soundproof blankets will work on getting rid of the lower decibel tones.
These types of blankets are either made from quilted fiberglass or polyester. These types of material greatly help in stopping sound from bouncing across the room.
Different Uses for Soundproof Blankets
There are many examples of the various uses of soundproof blankets depending on what type of room you’re attempting to soundproof. You can use these blankets in a recording studio by placing them around the walls of the room.
With the help of soundproof blankets and its sound absorbing capabilities, they will allow you to get a better quality audio recording by getting rid of the background noise and interference.
By arranging soundproof blankets in a strategic way within your home, in conjunction with soundproof curtains, you will have a good head start in soundproofing a room in your house.
If you have loud appliances, you can use these heavy blankets and place them around noisy appliances like a dishwasher, washing machine, dryer, and air conditioner.
Make sure the appliance can breathe, so it does not overheat. By reducing the noise of your air conditioner, you will also be reducing your energy cost by helping to maintain the temperature inside your home.
Some people often ask me if soundproof blankets really work and my answer is always yes, BUT they will certainly not absorb 100% of the noise in the room you’re soundproofing.
These blankets are there to muffle and deaden the sound within the room and also block some of the outside noise from coming inside the room.
One way to experiment of how a room full of soundproof blankets would sound like is by heading over to your closet with your smartphone in hand.
When you’re inside the closet full of clothing, turn the on music on your phone. You will notice that it sounds way better than if you would do this same experiment in your washroom. That’s basically what soundproof blankets are meant to achieve.
Soundproof Curtains
Putting up a set of soundproof curtains is a sure way to soundproof your window when trying to learn how to soundproof a room. Soundproof curtains work a lot like its blanket counterpart in reducing noise and absorbing sound.
You might think that a simple set of curtains could solve your noise issues in your home.
There are two benefits, as with the sound absorbing blankets, the curtains will not only block a degree of noise coming from outside the window, but it will also act as a sound absorber within the room you’re soundproofing.

I will quickly sum up If they actually work and how; but like anything in the soundproofing world, it all depends on what YOU consider soundproof.
Nothing is 100% silent so what I might find acceptable, you might not. So keep that in mind.
Soundproof curtains not only block out noise but in most cases, they will block out the sun as well, some as much as 100%. That is what some companies claims.
Curtains like this work even better if you already have thick blinds installed on the window.

Sound Absorbing Panels to Soundproof a Room
If you’re looking for some cheap DIY projects than building your own sound absorbing panels are one of the easiest and cheapest ways to get started in soundproofing a room.
Sound absorbing panels do a great job in soaking up the noise by preventing it from bouncing from wall to ceiling. They do nothing regarding noise blocking; they are strictly for absorption.
So people would often put a decorative banket on the wall that would act as a sound absorber.
You can buy panels that are self-adhesive, but you can also place them temporarily on the wall if you’re only going to soundproof a room for a short period. This is usually the case if you’re renting an apartment.
All you do is stick a command strip onto each corner on the back of the sound absorbing panel and then press the edges of the panel on the wall for 30 seconds.
You will have no trouble taking them down, and they shouldn’t fall off the wall if you followed the steps.
Do Egg Cartons Absorb Sound?
Using Egg Cartons as Free Sound Absorbers.
Egg cartons are one of one of the most popular “word-of-mouth” options when it involves cheap soundproofing suggestions. If you ever asked anyone how to soundproof a room for free, you most likely heard this tale in action.
So, what do you think? Have you ever tried this free soundproofing strategy?
You might be thinking that egg cartons would not be good at blocking noise, and you’d be right. Egg cartons are much too light, and they are also very thin.
What egg cartons are good for however is in reducing the echo in a room by absorbing the sound.
As you can imagine, an egg carton looks almost like the absorbing foam panels you would buy in the stores. The reason they both work well at reducing echo is that of their same type of shape.
What happens is that sound will bounce off hard flat surfaces like a wall. If you stick an egg carton on the wall, the sound will travel into the uneven air gaps structure of the egg carton and will act almost like an insulating agent.
Of course, an actual sound absorbing panel will work better than using egg cartons, but if your budget is low then the cardboard is better than nothing at all!
Using Furniture to Soundproof a Room
Again, I may use the term soundproofing when Im talking about sound absorbers, but they all work in conjunction into making a room in your home more peaceful.
There are certain types of furniture that soak up noise better than others. Just as an example, firm leather sofas, and chairs will not absorb sound as good as a plush couch made of fabric.
Also having a large rug in the room will help in drowning out the echo.
2 – Soundproof the Window
How to Soundproof a Window.
Now that you have the sound absorbing aspect under control you should move along to your window.
The window is another spot where noise will be coming in because of gaps and cracks. And of course, a window isn’t as good as blocking noise as a wall.
Soundproofing a window doesn’t have to be expensive or complicated. I will quickly highlight different steps you can take to ensure the maximum noise blocking from your window.
One of the first thing I would suggest if at all possible is to block the window in the room you’re soundproofing completely.
Of course, this is not an option for most people and might only be a good idea if you’re using the soundproof room as a media room for video and sound recording.
If you’re not going to block the window, why not replace it with a double pane window.
If you’re willing to dish out some cash in your attempt to figure out how to soundproof a room, then you could afford a complete window switch. A double pane window, if adequately installed can reduce noise from coming into the room by up to 60%
In addition to giving you some good noise blocking, a double pane window works excellently as temperature control.
These windows will keep the soundproof room cool in the summer and warm in the winter, and you’ll save money on your energy bill at the same time.
Be sure to ask the person that would be installing the window if they have experience in soundproofing projects. Tell them you’re not only changing the window because of a draft, but you’re also replacing the window because you’re trying to soundproof the room.
Some people simply do not have soundproofing experience and don’t know what type of material to use for better soundproofing.
Add an Inexpensive Layer on the Window
A much cheaper option than blocking or replacing the window is by adding an extra layer of acrylic over the window. Acrylic will reduce the amount of noise trying to pass through the window.
Doing this will require you to place a metal frame on the existing window, and then magnets are used to attach the acrylic layer to the window.
What’s nice with an acrylic layer is that it is transparent and will not block light from coming into the soundproofed room.
This method will block a small amount of noise. Perhaps this would be enough if you do not have much noise to block when combining this method with installing thick blinds and soundproof curtains.
If you’re going only to be using acrylic to prevent sound coming through your window, then I would suggest another method because you would be disappointed in the amount of noise it blocks.
Thin walls can be the biggest culprit when you’re trying to figure out how to soundproof a room.
There are many ways to remedy the problems that thin walls can create; some can be cheap, and some are a bit more expensive and would probably need hired help.
Book Shelves on Thin Walls
Using bookshelves as a noise blocker is not something I hear too often, but it is a solution that can work quite well.
If you have a wall with no doors or windows on it, then a bookshelf could work. The idea is to build a built-in bookshelf that would encompass the entire wall.
I would suggest placing a sheet of 5/8″ drywall between the wall and the bookshelf to make it even more soundproof because the books and decorations will most likely not cover the entire wall.
Build the bookshelf from one end of the room to the other and from floor to ceiling. This method only works if you have enough books to fill most of the shelf.
The thickness of the books will add an additional thick barrier between you and the noisy room next to the room you’re trying to soundproof.
Installing a bookshelf is a DIY job that won’t break the bank; and will serve as not only for noise reduction but storage as well.
If there are some empty spaces, you can consider installing cupboard doors that would fit the bookshelf and help eliminate the transfer of noise from the other room.
Add an Extra Layer of Drywall
Adding more mass to the wall will help in making a soundproof room.
The type of drywall you should add is 5/8″ thick. The combined thickness versus the regular drywall in most homes will not only help block noise but will make your wall look better by reducing the chance of it from bowing.
Placing a layer of drywall can be daunting if you’re not confident in your construction abilities but it’s really not that difficult.
I will give you a couple of suggestions to make the job go easier and have the finish results work better.
Ask for help; One sure way to make the job of thickening a wall is by having a helper with you while doing the job. Lifting and placing the drywall works a thousand times better with two people.
Green Glue; Green glue is a soundproofing compound that resembles caulking. Buy a couple of tubes of green glue and apply it on the side of the drywall that will be against the existing wall. Apply the green glue in a random zig-zag pattern, so you have a higher chance of getting some all over the drywall.
By adding an extra layer of drywall, you will notice a reduction in noise transfer from the adjoining room.
You’re not done yet, however. The next steps work in conjunction with the drywall in giving you better soundproofing.
Fill the Gaps and Cracks
One of the necessary steps some people would think is irrelevant can be the most crucial step when it comes to soundproofing; that is finding all the small gaps and cracks on the wall and sealing them.
Begin by removing all the electrical outlet covers. Inspect inside the rectangular metal box if the sides between the box and the wall are sealed or if there is a small open gap.
Most of the time there will be an open gap because most builders do not place importance on such small noise reduction details.
There are two ways to go about this depending if the room you’re soundproofing is finished or unfinished.
With an unfinished room, before the drywall is up and the electrical boxes are exposed; there is a product called putty pads you can use to wrap the box completely.

By covering the box with a putty pad, you will be sealing all the holes and gaps. This fix is not dangerous in term of a fire hazard because puddy pads are made for this type of soundproofing and work great.
If you are soundproofing a finished room, you will not be able to use the putty pads since you only have access to the front of the electrical box.
That’s perfectly fine because you can seal the gap between the electrical box and the wall with some green glue noise proofing compound.
Even something like flex seal would most likely do the trick, but I would buy the green glue if I had a choice between both products.
The only thing though is that the noise proofing compound will not seal the entire electrical box. The holes behind the outlet will remain open, but at least it will help concerning soundproofing a room.
After you’ve sealed the electrical outlets, it’s time to seal around the windows and baseboards.
You might not have to do the baseboards, but it is always prudent to do so because you never know how much sound is bleeding through the bottom section. All you would need to seal would be between the floor and baseboards.
Make the room also sound better using these acoustic panels! The difference is amazing!!!
Soundproof The Door
The door is the biggest hole in the room you’re soundproofing, so it is critical we have a method to reduce as much noise coming in from the entryway.
There are a few ways to soundproof the door. I will quickly give you some examples as to how to get this done.
Install a Solid Core Door
In your attempt to learn how to soundproof a room; one of the first things you should look at is to figure out how to soundproof a door.
Most interior door throughout your house will most likely be a hollow core door. A hollow core door is a door that is hollow on the inside and is made with thin sheets of wood.
A hollow core door will do very little in sound reduction. One easy fix is by installing a solid core door.
You will mostly see solid core doors as a door that leads outside, but you can definitely install one inside.
Some of the solid core doors are made of solid wood and look really good.
A solid core door will cost a bit more than a hundred dollars but can be very costly if you chose a fancy one, like everything else really.
I would go to your nearest hardware store and look at your options and go from there.
Door Sweep
Directly after you’ve installed your solid core door, you need to install a door sweep.
Door sweeps are inexpensive yet extremely important when soundproofing a room.
The solid door will do little regarding noise reduction if you have a gap spanning the entire length of the bottom of the door. Even a small crack will let a large amount of noise inside the room.
You can also install a complete door seal. Door seals can work very well if installed correctly.
Like I mentioned above, soundproof blankets would do an excellent job in reducing the amount of noise coming into the room.
If installing a solid core door proves to be too expensive then a soundproof blanket is your next best thing. It is all about introducing extra mass in front of the door, and a soundproof blanket will do just that!
Some soundproof blankets are specially made to soundproof a door. They are the right shape and size to match the size of the entryway perfectly.
Mass Loading Vinyl
There is a product called mass loading vinyl and could be very helpful when trying to soundproof a room. The one setback, however, is that it is expensive and quite ugly on the eyes.
The only reason I am mentioning this product is that some readers might want to learn how to soundproof a room and not care how it actually looks and care about the best noise reduction possible.
Mass loading vinyl is very easy to apply because they typically have a self-adhesive layer on one side.
All you do is unroll and cut in size, so it fits perfectly on the door. This would work on both a hollow and solid core door.
Vinyl would undoubtedly add to a solid core doors ability to stop sound from bleeding inside the room.
Rubber Door Gasket
Rubber gaskets will fill the crack on both sides of the door and ensure the door closes much more tightly.
This is a relatively cheap solution if the door is loose when fully closed. If the door wobbles to the touch or from a gust of wind when it is closed, then there is definitely a gap you need to fill.
Filling this gap with rubber gasket will only take a few minutes because they are self-adhesive and easy to install. Don’t forget to clean the surface where the gasket will stick.
Make sure the gasket that you do buy is not too thick as the door will be difficult to close or simply won’t close at all.
There are many more ways to go about soundproofing the door, but these are the choices I would put more focus into.
White Noise Machine
White Noise Machine.
The reason I saved the white noise machine towards the end of this article is if your attempts to soundproof a room fails you can always resort to making your own noise.
I guess I would have to call this situation an “if you can’t beat them, join them.”
Even if the room is now relatively soundproof, it won’t hurt to have a white noise machine. This depends on what you are using the soundproof room for and how much you’re willing to spend.
If the room is for music or video recordings, then a white noise machine is no good; but if the soundproof room is for an office, then I would certainly buy a white noise machine.
I use noise to concentrate, but I don’t use a white noise machine. The sound I use is modern classical music.
It’s probably not what you think, its way better and it puts me in the zone to do whatever I want to do that requires concentration.

So, back to the white noise machine. A white noise machine makes a constant sound that helps drown out any background noise that might be disturbing.
The sound of waves crashing or birds signing is not white noise because it is not constant and monotone.
A white noise machine is not meant as something to listen to; it is strictly to drown out background noise. It works very well if the outside noise isn’t too loud or erratic.
What’s funny is my sons have white noise machines to especially drown out thunderstorms. But a whole lot of people use the noise of thunder and rain to help them sleep as they find it soothing.
